Battling It Out, Hero-Style: October 29, 2018

Focus: How does synthesizing two texts create a larger, more complex meaning?

1. Warming up with three good things

2. Setting a new class character goal: Workshop Atmosphere

Recap of ongoing goals:

  • Reduce time outside of classroom (bathroom pass).
  • No packing up until 12:44:30.
  • Making your desk look ready for class.
  • Saying hello. :)

3. Engaging in  a little battle royale: Amir vs. _______?
  • Click HERE if you'd prefer to type.
4. Organizing and narrowing down your big, messy thoughts as you synthesize two heroes' journeys
  • Click HERE for the overview of the short synthesis essay and the step-by-step thesis process.
5. Composing your thesis statement and posting it on today's blog

HW:
1. Finish what you didn't finish in class; make sure that thesis gets posted on the blog, and check there for feedback from me. You will receive an attempt & completion grade for the thesis, but the most important part is the feedback.

2. Start looking at the next 10 words in your Quizlet Kite Runner vocabulary list (__-___); you will have a short quiz them this Friday, and there will be at least one throwback to the first 10 words as well.

3. Spend 15 minutes with your independent reading book (you have a little over a month left to finish it, but this is a rare week where you have no additional reading homework).

  1. Batman from "Batman Begins" directed by Christopher Nolan share many singularities with Amir from " Kiter Runner" by Khaled Hosseini’s that involve the hero's journey that bring them on an adventure with a final battle that takes all their might and bravery to complete.

    1. Good start! As you revise this thesis, try to make an argument about either which hero is more successful in their final battle, or find a more specific commonality between the way they fight or how they win.

      Delete
  2. Ralph from Wreck-It Ralph and Amir from The Kite Runner they both deal with separation because Amir loses both parents while Ralph must separate from his game to try and become a hero

    1. I like the focus. To make this even more analytical, assert how the separation affects each character / how it contributes to their development as heroes. If you wish, you can also argue which one grows more significantly from this step.

  4. Moana from Disney’s Moana is a far more superior hero than Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner because she exhibits more mental strength in her road of trials and she finds a civil and humane way to win her dragon battle without help.

    1. I like that you're making a clear judgment about which hero is stronger and how--you are being specific and analytical. Well done! One small suggestion in terms of wording: instead "far more superior hero than," you could say, "superior hero to" (this will get it a bit more concise).

  5. Finn the human from Adventure time and Amir both deal with tough trials and hard things throughout their journeys, and they both manage to come out of them as better people.

    1. I like the cause and effect structure here. I'd like you to be more specific in addressing which step of the hero's journey this essay will focus on. I'm thinking that you'll be examining the road of trials? Also, see if you can specify how this step in the hero's journey helps them come out as better people. For example, does the road of trials teach them humility? To accept help? To be selfless?

  6. Amir from The Kite Runner" and Spiderman from "Spiderman 3" because they are both strong because they are willing to team up and help defeat there dragons in the Boss Battle.

    1. I like how you contribute both of these heroes' strength to their willingness to team up. Two quick proofreading items: Delete the first "because" (you only need the second one), and switch "there dragons" to "their dragons."

  7. Elias from Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes and Amir from Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner differ in the sense that Amir relieves his guilt in his brother battle, but Elias acquires it. In the end, both heros learn from their mistakes in their trip to the underworld.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a complex thesis! I like the difference you note between their brother battles but the similarity they share in their trip to the Underworld. I think I may have said this already, but I would suggest connecting your two sentences with a semicolon.

  8. Moana from Moana is a stronger hero because she fights and wins her dragon battle for her island, while Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner fights his dragon battle for himself so he doesn’t have to live with his guilt.

    1. I like that you're asserting one hero's strength over the other one by focusing on their motivation behind fighting their dragon battles. Well done!

  9. Mia from A mango Shaped Space is superior to Amir from the Kite Runner because she learns how to forgive herself and others much sooner and much more successfully than Amir does.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good assertion here on which hero is stronger and why. My one big suggestion is to address which specific step (or steps) of the hero's journey that you will use to prove this (Ex: Crossing the threshold, trip to the Underworld, etc.).

      Delete
  10. Amir from Khaled Hosseini's "Kite Runner" and Spiderman from Marvel's "Spiderman Homecoming" because they both have lost their parents but keep pushing and in the end help people.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like the specific focus here on separation from / loss of parents. I'd like to see you make more of an analysis by either arguing which hero grows more significantly from this step, and / or how this loss pushes them to help people.

      Delete
  11. Blackpanther displays superior heroic traits compared to Amir from “The Kite Runner” because the Blackpanther had to win his Dragon fight alone after losing his leadership when defeated the first time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good start! I like the distinction you're asserting here. I'd like to see you pay as much attention in your thesis to Amir as you do to Black Panther...you could do this by simply adding to the end of this sentence. Ex: "...when defeated for the first time, while Amir relies on help from the very boy he's trying to save."

      Delete
  12. Nemo from Andrew Stanton’s Finding Nemo and Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner both go through a big fight that grows them as heros but Amir is far superior because it shows him a side of him he never knew.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like that you're addressing a specific step and arguing which hero grows more significantly from this step. Instead of "big fight," go ahead and use the hero's journey terminology (Brother Battle or Dragon Battle). Also, consider adding onto this sentence a clause that addresses how Nemo (or Marlin) is inferior.

  13. Ponyboy from the book "The Outsiders" is very similar to Amir from "The Kite Runner" because they are inspired to be different from their threshold guardians, and because they are becoming good again from the horrific events that they fixed the best they could after coming home.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm excited that you're focusing on threshold guardians! I have a question about the second half of your thesis--are you addressing a separate step of the hero's journey? If so, go ahead and name it. Or, is this the result of their interactions with threshold guardians? If so, try to clarify that connection.

  14. Meg from A Wrinkle in Time and Amir from The Kite Runner both struggle through an extremely hard physical battle with all odds against them and an even harder mental battle with themselves.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great start! Clear, focused writing. I'd like to see you take this to the next level by either arguing which one is a superior hero as a result of these battles, or by arguing what they gain mentally from their physical battles.

  17. Tony Stark from Iron Man displays superior heroism to Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner because Stark shows more courage and strength throughout his trip to the underworld and his dragon battle.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like the clear focus on these two very important steps of the hero's journey, and I also like your assertion of which one is the stronger hero. As you write your body paragraphs, think about how each one gains courage and strength through these steps and try to find slightly different points so that you don't start feeling repetitive.

  18. Megamind from Megamind and Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner both show heroic qualities, but Megamind is stronger because he had a harder battle to win.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good start--I like your assertion of which one is the stronger hero, and I also like the reason you give. I'd like to see you use hero's journey terminology in your thesis (for ex, you can call it a Brother Battle or Dragon Battle).

      Delete
  19. In Khaled Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner, and The Matrix movie Amir and Neo both come across struggle and harsh realizations throughout their childhood and adult life which prepares them for what is yet to come.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like the connection you're making here between their early childhood struggles and the adult selves they become. I'd like to see you address a specific step of the hero's journey here--are you focusing on separation from parents? Road of trials?

  20. Katniss from Collin’s The Hunger Games and Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner both display heroic qualities when bravely facing their dragon battle; however Katniss is more selfless throughout the book making her more heroic.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Strong cause and effect thesis! I like your assertion that one is superior to the other because of selflessness. If you want to, you can add to the end of this statement by suggesting why Amir is not selfless in his dragon battle.

      Delete
  21. Batman during his life shows more Heroism than Amir from The Kite Runner because he suffered through a harder road of trial.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great start--I like the evaluation you're making here. Can you specify what made his road of trials more challenging? For example, are you referring to mental or physical challenges (or both)?

      Delete
  22. Mr Incredible from the "Incredibles" and Amir both display heroism by answering the call to adventure and crossing the threshold.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good start--well-chosen steps in the hero's journey. I'd like you to get a little more specific and analytical, either by asserting which hero is more compelling and why, or what specific parallel they share in the way they complete these steps.

  23. Wade Wilson, Deadpool, or Mr. Deadpool and Amir both have a major dragon battle with Deadpool and Ajax in Deadpool and Amir and Assef in the Kite Runner.

    Replies
    1. Good focus. Try to specify which hero completes this step more compellingly and how--this will get you to a higher level of analysis.

      Delete
  24. Harry Potter from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling exhibits remarkable heriorism over Amir fromm Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner because Harry accepts his trip to the underworld without hesitation and Amir does not.

    Replies
    1. Clear, specific, and analytical thesis. You're definitely ready to start drafting!

  25. Woody from Toy Story And Amir from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini both show many heroic qualities throughout their hero's journey, however woody showed to be the better hero because he was not hesitant to pass the threshold while Amir was very hesitant.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really like what you're doing here--good evaluation and analysis. In terms of grammar, use a semicolon between "journey" and "however," then use a comma after "however."

      Delete
  26. Forrest from the movie Forrest Gump and Amir from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner both display many heroic elements while accepting their call to action; however, Amir was hesitant of accepting his call while Forrest accepts without thinking twice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great thesis--you're making a clear, specific analysis and evaluation. Just one little suggestion: Write the entire thing in the present tense.

      Delete
  27. Barry Allen from the tv show The Flash and Amir from Khalid Hosseini’s The Kite Runner both show many heroic qualities and end up winning their final battle, Amir was very hesitant when it came to his call to action but Barry Allen accepted it without hesitation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like the specificity of your focus and evaluation. One quick thing: This is a run-on sentence, but you can fix it easily by using a semicolon (;) instead of a comma between "battle" and "Amir."

      Delete
  28. Marlin in Finding Nemo and Amir in the The Kite Runner both have an empowering underworld scene where they learn from their past mistakes and understand how to be a better version of themselves.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fantastic work--I like your analysis of what these heroes gain from these two heroic steps. Well done! Start drafting!

  29. Sohrab from Khalid Hosseini's The Kite Runner is superior to Ralph from the movie Wreck it Ralph because although Ralph faced a near death experience by throwing himself at the Coca-Cola volcano, Sohrab stood up not only for Amir, but against Assef who had previously tortured him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great focus! I like the evaluation and analysis here. My one suggestion is perhaps to take out a couple of details (like the volcano)--you can include them in your introductory paragraph so that they don't have to be in your thesis.

      Delete
  30. Wade Wilson/ deadpool and Amir both have a major dragon battle with Deadpool having to fight everyone to save his girlfriend and amir having to fight off assef.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like your focus on the dragon battle--good choice for this particular comparison. My big suggestion is to make either an analysis of what qualities these characters gain from their dragon battles, or an evaluation of which character is a superior hero in the dragon battle.

      Delete
  31. Batman is a superior hero to Amir because Batman’s actions as the result of losing his parents are more superior than Amir’s are, because he doesn’t have superpowers and he still fights crazy villains unlike Amir.
