Kite Runner Fishbowl on Chapters 14-16: October 9, 2018

Focus: What is the hero's journey? How does it start? How does it deepen our understanding of The Kite Runner?

1. Warming up with two examples of the first step of the hero's journey:

Finding Nemo
The Lion King (start around 32:00)

As you watch, please respond to the following questions in your notes:

What do these clips have in common? Try to go beyond the obvious here.

What heroic patterns do they reveal?

How do these moments affect the main characters?

Which characters appear to be following this heroic pattern in The Kite Runner? How so?

How has the separation (physical or emotional) affected these characters’ self-perception, behavior, and motivation?  Please include at least one specific passage from the novel to support your response.

        1. The disney clips can relate to the kite runner because Amir just lost his dad and is working to overcome that loss.

        2. The Lion King connects to Kite Runner bc Simba lived because his dad sacrificed his life and Amir is alive because of his mom who died giving birth to him.

          1. I agree both of them sacrificed themselves for their children.

        3. They both lose parents and meaningful characters in the story and then they follow the hero's journey and overcome challenges.

        4. After Baba dies, Amir feels like he needs to become independent and learn to live without rules. Its the same for Simba and Nemo.

        5. Everything was okay at the beginning of the book until Hassan went off to get the blue kite just like how in Finding Nemo Marlin was playing with his wife until the big fish attacked their home.

        6. In the Lion King and The Kite Runner they both lose their fathers and not only is that a connection by itself, it shows that both Simba and Amir are in the process of the hero's journey and they have to overcome the death of their fathers and use it to fuel their motive to do great things and get revenge in some way.

        7. I can relate The Lion King to The Kite Runner, because both main characters feel like they could've changed the outcome for example Mufasa's death and the rape. Both main characters could've fixed things but instead they have to deal with the guilt.

          2. I agree with this as well because bof kids who were involved in something tragic feel guilty

        8. A connection between the clips and the kite runner is that both of them deal with tragic events. For Simba and Nemo they both lost their parents which drove them to their adventures. For Amir I think it is what he witnessed with Hassan and that's what is driving him back to Afghanistan.

          1. I agree, I think all of these characters journeys were offset by their loss. For example Amir goes back to Afghanistan because he lost his father, he is losing Rahim Khan and he wants to make amends with Hassan.

            Delete
        9. When Baba dies it leads Amir to have that in his mind with him and the same thing happened in the clips because now that experience will stick with them.

        10. One connection that I read in The Kite Runner and I saw in the video clips was about how similar all of the fathers were, in The Kite Runner Baba was a great man who raised Amir up well while in Nemo his father risked his life to save him and in The Lion King Mufasa saved his son's life. All of these clips/book have similar fathers.

        11. The main characters all lose their best friends. Marlin loses his wife, Amir loses Hassan/Hassan loses Amir and Symba loses his friend Nala. They all overcome this loss overtime but at some point in the story it comes back to haunt them.

          ReplyDelete
        12. Kion in the lion king is probably thinking that he is the reason for his father's death, and that connects to the Kite Runner because Amir believed that it is his fault that his mother died, but that's certainly not the case.

          ReplyDelete
        13. The Lion King and The Kite Runner both lose their fathers. This shows Simba and Amir going through the Hero's Journey, and how they must over come the death of their loved one and rebound from it.

        14. In the disney movies the parent is killed when the character is at a young age and in the Kite Runner Amir loses his mom when he is born.

        16. both of the clips remind me of how Amir loses Hassan at the begining of the book but instead of death Hassan and Ali and left, and then Baba later in the book.

        17. In both an important parent figure in their life dies and they have to grow up without them.

          ReplyDelete
        18. Just like in "The Kite Runner" Amir loses his father just like Simba did.

          ReplyDelete
        19. The Kite runner relates to these clips because the parents, Baba, Coral, and Mufasa, all sacrifice themselves for other people. Baba protects the woman on the truck, and fights for Amir to have a good life, taking them to California. Mufasa and Coral both die trying to protect their children.

        20. The Kite Runner relates to these Disney clips because everyone dealt with loss. Marlin lost his wife and most of his kids, Simba lost his dad, and Amir has lost his dad, Hassan, the hope of ever having a child, and from the looks of it he is about to lose Rahim Kahn.

          ReplyDelete
        21. I think that both of the fathers in the disney clips do anything to help out their child and in the kite runner one example of something Baba did for amir is when Amir asked baba to ask the generals daughter to marriage.

          ReplyDelete
        22. The Disney films connect to the Kite Runner because both of the characters in the clips have to suffer some sort of setback or tragedy that the have to overcome, just like Amir will have to do after his dad passed away. Simba in The Lion King also tends to blame himself for how his father passed away just like how Amir blames himself for how his mom passed away. These are some obstacles that they have to learn to forgive themselves for and grow from.

          ReplyDelete
          Replies
          1. I agree, I think Amir might have also blamed himself for his father's death. He might have blamed himself because he didn't tell anyone about Babas cancer and he didn't try harder to take Baba to the doctor

            Delete
          2. I agree with this. Adding onto this they are also connected through the relationships that they have had with the people that they lost. For example after Amir and Baba left Kabul they had a strengthened relationship until Baba dies. Simba and Mufasa's relationship was obviously very strong and same with Coral and merlin's relationship.

            Delete
        23. Amir's mother died giving birth to him so he believes that her death was his fault. Simba also believes that he was also responsible for his dad's death.

          1. Good connection to earlier in the book, I forgot about tha.

        24. What makes a main character a "hero" is that they get stronger through loss. Nemo, never knew his mother (like Hassan, too), and he feels a sense of loss because of it. Simba lost his father and blames himself because of it. This is similar to Amir's relationship with his father, even before he died. Amir felt a loss because as a child, he never got on well with his father. He grew stronger because of that.

          1. I agree with this, Amir most most likely felt like he didn't have parents when he was a kid. When he and Baba moved to America he started bonding more with Baba and I think his sense of loss might have started fading.

            Delete
          2. I also think that Nemo relates to Hassan because Nemo was made fun of for his small fin just as Hassan was made fun of for the fact that he is a Hazara

            Delete
        25. In the two clips we watched it corresponds with this calm view in the beginning of the films and of the Kite Runner to a massive shift in the plot. Once dramatic events took place including the death of a parent in the flim and the harsher event taking place in the Kite Runner they characters begin their real journey. They have set out to discover something.

        27. The movie clips were similar to the Kite Runner because of the hero's journey. In both of the movie clips the small kids lose a parent trying to save them, and in Kite Runner, Amir loses his mom and his dad.

A family is the people who raised you, who has been there for you at some point in your life, and that you can call mom dad and many other things.

        29. Why do you guys think in most books or movies the main characters parents die.

          ReplyDelete
          Replies
          1. I think this happens because they always need something to happen to them so they have something to overcome and use to fuel their motives.

            Delete
          2. I agree, I think that it helps create the story to have something motivating them and to stick with them.

          3. The parents are normally the people who watch over the main character and teach them everything they know. Parents are almost always there to support and help you, which in some ways can restrict a main characters independence. When the main character's parents die, they are forced into independence and they have to learn how to fight and succeed on their own. When the parents pass away, it not only provides the loss in a Hero's Journey, but also gives the main character the independence they need to make something of their lives.

        31. Do you think it was emotional for Amir to go back to where he grew up with Baba now that he is dead?

          ReplyDelete
          Replies
          1. I believe that Amir must be struggling being back there because it is definitely going to bring back a lot of memories that Amir had with Baba and could hurt him knowing that he can never experience that again.

            Delete
          2. I think it's emotional for Amir to return not only because Baba passed away, but because he has made many mistakes and most of his regrets stem from Afghanistan. Everything he went through with Hassan, Asef, and other characters makes Afghanistan a place filled with many memories and it's difficult to overcome everything that took place.

            Delete
          3. Yes. I don't think he entirely though out going back to Afghanistan because he just sorta jumped onto the idea.

        35. On page 183, the author writes, "A month later, Martin called and informed me I was going to be a published novelist." Do you think Baba would regret being so disapproving of Amir in his childhood if he knew Amir was actually successful in his career.

This walk was supposed to clear Amir's mind, but instead it is bringing back all of Amir's worst memories. Not being able to have a child and watching Hassan get raped. Do you think this made Amir sad and full of regret from being reminded of this, or did he see these reminders and think about how he was glad that he could move past them and still make a good happy life for himself.
