Seeing Ourselves in Bradbury's Characters: March 19, 2019

Focus: What are we noticing about Bradbury's human and non-human characters?

1. Warming up the graphic novel version's depictions of characters (with your partner)

Watching the first four minutes of Michael's Chaney's Ted Talk, "How To Read a Graphic Novel"

Find a page that portrays your character (Montag, Clarisse, Mildred, Captain Beatty, or the Mechanical Hound)

  • What do you notice about the use of colors this page?
  • What do you notice about the use of font size? What about panel size?
  • What do you notice about the layout of this page?
  • What do you notice about the word choices in the bubbles? What do these word choices reveal about your character?
  • Flipping through the first part of the book, are you noticing any patterns?
  • According to Chaney in his Ted Talk, the graphic novel reveals "our mind's eye reflection of ourselves." In the panels you're looking at, do you see versions of ourselves?

2. Reviewing fishbowl expectations and diving into F451 Fishbowl #1: Pages 1-36

3. Wrapping up with takeaways/questions: So far, what patterns are you noticing in Bradbury's characters?

HW:
1. EVERY NIGHT: Look through your F451 List 1 words in Quizlet to prepare for a quiz on Friday.

2. For THURSDAY: Read through page 65 and complete your second reading journal; leaders should prepare and post their syllabus.

3. For FRIDAY: Quiz on F451 List words.

  1. Clarisse reminds me of our society in the way that if you give anyone the time to get to know who they are, they stand out to you.

  2. what is the symbolism of the number 451?

    1. 451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature that book paper burns at.

  3. Why does the illustrator decide to make all of the characters in such dark colors?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the illustrator did this because we don't exactly know all these characters yet, we only know the outside. I think later on in the book since we will gain knowledge on the characters it will start to show more and more detail.

  7. How come Montag is represented by dark colors and Clarisse is represented by this golden glow?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Clarisse is represented by the color gold because she is someone who conforms against the grey and dark colors of society. Clarisse is the only one in the story that truly appreciates the beauty in things, and that makes her happy. She is the only one in the book who is happy, and her happiness just adds to her golden glow. On page seven of this book, Clarisse asks guy if he's happy and then she skips down the road in the moonlight. I think this proves even more that Clarisse and her family are the only happy people in this world.

    2. I think the author is trying to portray Montag as a normal and status quo person and when he is acquainted with Clarisse she shows him a light that he hasn't seen. Clarisse is a very shiny character that thinks deeply and brings new points of view to life. Seen on pages 9, 1, and 11 of the graphic novel version.

  8. Why does the dog start growling and chasing Guy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. After that scene one of his "coworkers" says that he doesn't like or dislike he is just programmed. So maybe he is programed to growl at anyone but this also could mean something that we don't know about Guy yet.

  9. How come Clarisse is pictured golden and bright when every other character is dark and gloomy?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Why is the graphic novel only shown in a few main colors on each page?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it is to keep a simple color pattern and theme on each page.

  11. On page 5 I noticed that the city in the background looks like Denver, and even though it's late the buildings are still lit up and there is still a lot of people on the train.

  12. Why is Montag shown in dark colors and Clarisse is a bright yellow?

    ReplyDelete

    1. This is a cool way of portraying the characters and is really shown on page 11 when Clarisse goes inside and asks "Are you happy?".

      Delete
    2. Because Clarisse will have a greater impact on the overall outcome of Montag as a person.

    1. I think this is a way to show that they are hiding something, maybe to make it seem more dramatic and eary. Shadowing a figure can symbolize many things.

  14. what happened to clarisse montag hasn't seen her in days?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why does the author decide to show Beatty with only half of his face in some of the pictures?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the author decided to portray Beatty's true character and intent through the action of hiding half of his face. Beatty seems to be a normal character when he is first introduced in the book, later he decides to burn an old woman alive without a second thought. Guy and the other fireman seemed uncomfortable burning the old woman along with her books, but Beatty didn't have a second thought when he was doing it.

  17. Why does the town in the background look so much like it does in the real world?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the author is attempting to force the reader to picture these events occuring in real life, by making the surroundings look as realistic as possible.

  18. On pages 11-12 montag is in the dark symbolizing ignorance and Clarisse is symbol as a angelic character symbolizing a very open-minded people.

    ReplyDelete
  19. On page 27 of the graphic novel why do you think they show the mechanical hound in the biggest panel just standing in the cage.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I noticed that when the fireman's dog is pictured the colors are very bright near the dog and very dark everywhere else.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that the dog is a symbol put in the book to try and foreshadow Guys true thoughts about the world he is living in. Guy was asked if he was happy, and he suddenly realized that he wasn't. Now he keeps thinking about the reasons he isn't happy and I think one of the main reasons is because of all the restrictions he has in his life.

  21. Montag's eyes are rarely seen in detail unless he is with Clarisse, why is this? Does this mean something for later in the book, do you think Montag will open up more with Clarisse?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I think this is showing how closed off Montag is and foreshadowing how later he will open up because of Clarisse.

      Delete
  22. On page 36/37 of the graphic novel, the colors are dull and dark portraying how the society is grim and depressing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. on pages 38 and 39, the pages are really bright and yellow which is referring to either the fire that is about to happen or it could refer to montag having a sudden change of heart while witnessing the lady refusing to leave her humble abode.

    ReplyDelete
  24. why is Clarisse's face black in one picture?

    ReplyDelete
  25. i noticed they use the color black and yellow quite often. what is behind the number 451?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why is Montag always in darker colors?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it's because he is hiding something or something happened in his past that we might learn about soon, and since we don't know a lot about the character he is illustrated to be closed off and up for interpretation as well.

      Delete
  27. Clarisse is a very analytical yet hopeful person. Montag likes to blindly follow society's expectations of him and he's finally beginning to question if he likes the world he lives in. When Clarisse asked him if he's happy, Montag couldn't get that question off his mind and finally admitted that he could be in a better place. I feel like Clarisse will become a much bigger part in Montag's life and show him that they could make a better world.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why do people in the book believe books should be burned? What would make people think that in our society?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it's more of a competition thing just like in the story we read, no one can be smarter than another person. and I also think it might be a way for people to be unaware of our history and what people used to write about, it's a very closed off society and I think the people in control are doing this so people don't feel like we used too.

  29. What do you think the most important scene in the book has been? What scene showed the most symbolism or created the most predictions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So far I think that the first opening scene has been the most important because it sets the plot and starts the reader off with a question of why the books have to be burned.

      Delete
  30. I think the way the dog only doesn't like Guy will mean something in the future of the book.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Books often contain controversial material, the reason some books are banned today is because they bring up questions and question society. In this world, they are looking for everyone to be happy and have fun and not question anything.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with this statement and I would like to add that this idea can also be connected to the colors used in the illustrated version. For example the color yellow is often used to symbolize happiness, but this can also be seen as controversial to your original idea because Clarisse's character is a very curious and deep thinking character.

  32. I find the way the the images are displayed on the pictured book are kinda interesting and give me more of an idea what is really going on.

  33. "My uncle says his grandfather remembered when children didn't kill each other. But that was a long time age when they had things different.(page 27)" What has changed with time and why do you think they have changed?

    ReplyDelete
  34. On page 11 it says, "Her face was like a snow-covered island upon which rain might fall, but it felt no rain." This describes Mildred's face after her suicide attempt. After the suicide attempt, they seem to get over the attempt pretty fast. Is suicide a big problem in their society, and why do they get over it so fast like it's nothing?

    ReplyDelete
  35. If Montag is our hero, what is his call to adventure?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Montag's call to adventure would be either understanding clarisse better giving him a change of motive or after the lady lit herself on fire in the house, he could have a change of heart and realized that the 'insane' people aren't a lot different than everybody else who is classified as not insane.

      Delete
    2. i think his call to adventure is probably getting rid of all the firemen and actually start putting out fires instead of starting them.

      Delete
    3. I think Montag's call to action will be to rise against everything he knows and has believed in to stop the burning of books. I also think this will all change in him because of what Clarisse is telling/showing him about life and even about himself.

      Delete
    4. When Rahim Kahn calls Amir, he tells him, "There is a way to be good again." I feel like Clarisse walks up to Montag and hints that there is a way to be happy again...(but he hadn't fully realized he was unhappy until then).

      Delete
  36. on page 26 Clarisse says "Your laugh sounds much nicer than it did" referencing Montag laughing after he said he was looking at the 200 foot billboards. Do you think Montag is becoming more comfortable and knowledgeable about the alleged 'insane' people?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think talking to Clarisse made him more understanding as she expressed her thoughts to him.

      Delete
  37. Do you think they are using fire to symbolize something other than burning books?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think fire can be a big symbol in this book that we don't know of yet, besides fire.

      Delete
    2. I think the fire also represents the burning that is happening in society. Something big happened between our time right now, and the future guy is living in. The government is super strict, reading and being a pedestrian is banned, and it almost seems like being happy is banned. As if the fire represents the burning and snuffing of everyone's happiness.

      Delete
    3. I think fire can be a symbol of destruction and it can show how easily something can become destroyed and lost forever.

      Delete
    4. I think Montag has been falsely illuminated by the wrong kind of fire...he's only been engaging with destructive fire. Clarisse, however, is a different kind of light; in the graphic novel, hers is a lovelier, more illuminating, life-giving light.

      Delete
  38. I think the government took away books because without books they can bend history to be anything they want it to be.

For example, when Beatty is talking to Montag about how Benjamin Franklin created the firemen, "to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin"(32). Obviously Benjamin Franklin did not create the firemen, but by destroying books, the government can say whatever they want.

    1. Can the government change the past because they are burning all knowledge of the past?

      Delete
    2. Yes Matt. Obviously. If no one knows what happened in their past, then how can they question the government.

      Delete
    3. If the government controls the past then they must also control the present.

      Delete
  39. While looking at the graphic novel I noticed that Clarisse has this kind of golden glow around her as her coloring. On page 5 she asks "Do you ever read any of the books you burn?". That question makes me believe that Clarisse does read books and that she's going to kind of be like Montag's "supernatural aid" in his hero's journey because right from the get go she's challenging him and his beliefs. I think that Montag is going to change his beliefs about books with Clarisse's help, which helps explain why Clarisse's coloring stands out in the graphic novel.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I feel like Clarisse is trying to push Montag to go either read a book or to stop burning them and she is trying to change him to go against what he has known.

  40. I feel like in fahrenheit 451 books are banned because there was something that happened in past the and government does want people to get any ideas of anything because some might think that people get bad ideas from movies and books.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ray Bradbury never actually says why books are banned. I think this was a good decision because it leaves the reader wondering who or what banned books. When I think about this I connect it to the government because I can't think of anyone or anything that has the power to completely ban books.

    1. I think that the dog has so many legs because it shows how much society has changed an innocent dog into a monster.

    2. I think it is because it will make the dog faster

  44. Why do they drive so fast?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think they drive so fast because the government doesn't want them to see out of the windows and get a big sense of the outside world. I think this might be why being a pedestrian is also illegal.

    1. They probably drive fast to get places faster.

  46. I think Clarisse is colored more brightly because she will have a bigger impact on the story. She seems different then everyone else and she already is making Montag uncomfortable.

  47. How does society get to a point where suicide is a common occurrence. What is draining all of the happiness out of the society, because so far there really have been no traces of happiness or positivity.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that many people in this society have nearly been brainwashed and influenced to think that whatever the government or higher power says is right. When people aren't free to think or do what they believe in, it can make someone feel like their life won't lead anywhere. When people realize what is being taken away from them, they could be pushed to make that choice.

      Delete
    2. This society doesn't seem to have much going on. It seems that the citizens just live to work, not doing anything else. It just seems bland and boring, which may drain happiness.

      Delete
    3. I think that by banning and restricting all the things people enjoy, like books and social events, people are getting depressed much quicker. There are probably a lot of suicides everyday, and people are probably sinking into the unhappiness until they can't bare it any longer.

      Delete
  48. On page 6, Montag tells Clarisse, "You think too many things". Brandbury also mentioned that Montag was nervous when he said it. This seems to show that people are scared of having deep thoughts or observations about their society. What made this a fear for them? What part of Clarisse's past makes her so confident in sharing these thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  49. On page 7, Clarisse says, "My uncle was arrested another time- did I tell you?- for being a pedestrian." Why is being a pedestrian, someone who walks, illegal? Talking about this book we mostly think of the banned books, but there are obviously other strange laws such as banning pedestrians.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's interesting to me how interrogative Clarisse is. She just met Montag and she is already asking him questions that you wouldn't normally ask someone in this futuristic world.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I find this interesting too, she has a strange curiosity which no other characters seem to have.

      Delete
    2. I think Clarisse is used to asking personal questions and being outgoing. Her family is full of people who break the laws, and have fun doing it. I think that because of growing up that way, Clarisse has developed a sense of curiosity. She is so curious in the way the world works, and the feelings of others that she decides to ask personal and intense questions to complete strangers.

      Delete
  51. I believe that government banned books because they will turn the society upside down. If they were able to read these books they would have different views on the world and they would have a new outlet and way to show creativity.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In the book Montag is beginning to contradict his decision in his job and what they are doing. On page 36 he realizes him and the other firemen might not be doing the right thing when the old lady had decided to kill herself for the books which brought Montag to a sort of confusion.

    1. Yes after she asked Montag how she feels Montag is left by himself to think and he says,"Of course Im happy, what does she think?" (pg 12 graphic novel). This put his own life into perspective and he is second guessing himself and his whole life.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I think this was kind of his call to adventure and will start to make a change in him.

      Delete
    3. Yes I do. When you think about this question being asked out of the blue in a very bland society I think it forces one to think about it a different way that they would have. It is sen that Clarisse is already beginnning to change Guy's view of things as seen when he begins to raise head to catch the rain drops in his mouth on page 21.

      Delete
  60. In the graphic novel, Clarisse is a lot brighter than the other characters. I think this is to show that Clarisse is not like the other characters. She stands out in the crowd and acts differently than everyone else. She is more imaginative and interested. You can tell by all of the questions she asks Montag from page 4 to page 7.

    ReplyDelete
  61. In the graphic novel on page 34 a picture in the left column, 3rd row down it says "Established 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies." In the regular book it says on page 6 "Is it true that long ago fireman used to put fires out instead of going to start them?". 1. I think that Clarisse will help Guy realize what these strange laws are doing to their society, and they are being brainwashed.

    2. I think that Clarisse will end up influencing Montag more than Montag will influence her. If you compare the pages of the graphic novel you can see the from his first interaction with her on page 9 to his second one on page 22 you can already see her rubbing off on him because he has more light in his eyes, but whenever he's not, his eyes are darker.
